Trappist

Original name for a monk of the Cistercian abbey La Trappe, who in the 17th century was reformed by the abbot Rance later this name is extended to the Cistercian monks of many abbeys that this reform followed.

The Cistercian monks devote themselves entirely to God. For God only makes it results of a free and monastic and contemplative (contemplative) life.


The name 'Trappist Beer';is legally protected and should only be used for beer brewed by Trappist monks in their monastery. Of all Belgian beers there are only six Trappist may bear the name: Achel, Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren. Only these six beers are brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey.
